What is the Veeam task setup in this archiving scenario

Post by paulo »

Hello everyone,

I'd like to set up my backup copy tasks for archiving purposes. This is my environment:

My Veeam v8 backs up my VMware VMs to disks on my backup server locally. I have set up a NAS device as an additional repository for archiving my backup files. I want to only copy the full backup file to the NAS device at the end of every month and I'd like to know how to set it up under veeam backup copy job settings (such as copy intervals, number of restore points and whether or not to enable "Compact full backup file").

Any input is appreciated!

How many monthly restore points you want to preserve? Do you need weekly restore points, as well? Thanks.

12 monthly restore point (archive for one year and the monthly will be overwritten at the same month next year) and no weekly restore point (so I wouldn't use GFS type of backups).

There are two options available for you.

If you want to create monthly points as increments (no GFS), then, set 30 days as copy interval and 12 as number of restore points to keep.

Otherwise (monthly points as independent fulls), set whatever copy interval you like (from 1 to 30 days), set 2 as number of restore points to keep, enable archiving and specify 12 as number of monthly restore points.

Thanks.

Note that in the first case, the day restore point is created will shift with time, due to different number of days in months.

Thank you all for your suggestions!

I have set up several backup copy jobs which have been running for several months. In this case, it is a bi-monthly archiving, and thus every 60 days veeam does a copy to the archiving repository. I planned to only create full backup copies, however this is what i have:

1. Task setting: does a copy every 60 days

2. I set keeping 6 restore points (since it is bi-monthly and i keep the backup for a year). Compact Full is checked.

3. However on the archiving repository, I've got incremental files. I thought I would be able to get all full backup files copied over. Am I setting up something wrong here?

Thanks!

Hello. Backup Copy jobs are forever incremental, so there is no option to copy full backup files over currently. We are considering to add it as an option in future releases. Thanks!

That said, enabling GFS retention in the backup copy job allows you to offload monthly restore points as independent fulls.
