Slow replication to RAID5 array

Hi, We have just purchased a new DELL R730 to act as a disaster recovery host for Veeam Replica's. At the moment this is on site while we complete the initial replica's but will eventually be moved off site.

We are experiencing a very,very slow throughput for the initial replica job and have confirmed this is down to the RAID array which I find rather odd. The server has 4 x 4TB nearline SAS disks 7.2k in a RAID 5 and im replicating to this server at approximately 10-13mb with a new job. If I reconfigure the RAID array and create a single RAID1 mirror using two of the same drives im getting throughput of approximately 70-80mb on a new job.

Surely a raid 5 array cant have that much I/O degradation and slow down the job by 70-80% ? The raid card is a h730

any advice gratefully received to get better throughput on my RAID 5

Hi David,

Initial Replication is pretty much sequential write on the target side. If you have problems with sequential writes, then you are in trouble.

I would recommend the following:
1) Update Firmware of your Raid Card (inline with the HCL of VMware)
2) Use actual Veeam Backup & Replication Version
3) Use Default Settings for the Replication Job whenever you can.
4) Place a Proxy VM on this target host and use HotAdd as Proxy Processing Mode.
5) Place a Proxy on Source Host.
6) Select the Proxys four Source and Target at the Veeam Job.
