Netapp Storage Question

Post by jsc8041 »

In the B&R console, when I go to SAN Infrastructure, I am able to bring up our offsite FAS array that we Snapmirror to, but when selecting a snapshot to see the available VM's, nothing populates.

This works fine when exploring the snapshots on our production array.

Any ideas? I'm sure I'm overlooking something.

Thanks for the help.

Is it iSCSI or NFS?

Do you have the iSCSI service enabled on the offsite FAS array? Does any Veeam proxy has access to it to do the rescan job?

The Snapmirror destination volumes' LUN's are not connected to the ESXi hosts' HBA's. I was told that it's better to leave it that way and only connect the LUN's on the DR site after Snapmirror has been broken. Perhaps this isn't true?

The reason I inquired to begin with, was that we already have a Netapp Snapmirror environment in place, and the main reason for purchasing Veeam is to have the granular VM accessibility, and faster ability to failover.

In theory, if we continued to utilize Snapmirror, if a DR situation were to occur, once the volumes are presented to the ESXi hosts at the DR site, would we be able to do Instant VM Recovery via Veeam Explorer for Storage Snapshots?

Thanks for your time.

These volumes do not have to be present to the ESXi hosts, the reason why you can't see VMs on the volume is that Veeam proxy server (installed in your infrastructure) cannot reach your FAS array to do the rescan job. Also what about iSCSI service? Is it running or not?

The iSCSI service is running on the DR site Veeam Proxy server.

I've mapped the destination Snapmirror Volume LUN to the DR site ESXi host HBA.

Does a VMFS datastore need to be created from that LUN in order to be able to see the VM's in Veeam Explorer for Storage Snapshots?

Is iSCSI licensed on the SnapMirror Storage?

Why? If Veeam Proxy is able to access the SnapMirror Storage System with it´s own iSCSi Initiator (config on Netapp is done automatically) we can clone the SnapMirror Snapshots, mount it automatically to the Veeam Proxy and our Proxy look (scan) for VMs on that SnapShot volume.

No. Please see above.

iSCSI is licensed on the Snapmirror storage.

I do have a Veeam proxy server with the iSCSI Initiator running at the DR site. I only tried mapping the LUN to the ESXi host because the VM's weren't visible when I just had the Veeam proxy connected to the SAN.

You can go to History-System and check at Storage Scanns why they are not working.
Please contact our support if the error is not obvious.
