Upgraded network to 10GB in hopes to make backups faster

Post by mephisto »

Hi there,

I just installed some Intel X540-AT2 (10GB adapters) on my mixed bunch of Dell R710-R720-R515 and was hoping my backups to go way faster. I migrated the management network switch to this new NIC and the traffic all goes through it as well, teh 1GB cards have been un assigned.

For my surprise the copies and everything else like trying to copy of replicate a VM across always says network as bottleneck, and Indeed the speeds are no more than 70MB sec, even with low compression, CPU usage is very low. I don't know what is really wrong, I got 2 hosts with latest 5.5 U2 ESXi installed, but the problem seems the same across the board. I even tried to backup to some Samsung 845DC PRO to make sure it was not storage bottle neck, but I still get the same (these SSDs in RAID-10 can do easily 1200MB/sec+)

What do you guys suggest I could do?

Thanks!

Hi,
Could you provide your bottleneck statistics and processing rates for several jobs?
Also, what transport mode are you using? Thanks!

One of my colleagues is dealing with the backup server now, I'll check in a few minutes.

I just quickly deployed 2 VMs on the same host with a couple of CPUs each and enough RAM, strangely I only get get speeds of a normal 1GB speeds :/ There is something really weird here...

[ 3] local 192.168.25.133 port 49168 connected with 192.168.25.134 port 5001
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[ 3] 0.0-20.0 sec 2.60 GBytes 1.11 Gbits/sec

I should get at least a few GB sec, the VMs sitting on teh same host all connected to a VMXNET3 adapter

Thanks for the reply, but what I meant was the following statistics:
Source ..% > Proxy ..% > Network ..% > Target ..%
Transport mode used can be recognized by [nbd], [hotadd] or [Direct SAN] tag.
Thanks.

Hi i have 10GB nics and dedicated 10GB Switch for SAN , Dell Dr4000 backup repository and can acheive 1GB+ (but less that 2GB/sec) read speeds for some backups.
but still get nowhere near 10GB/s DirectSAN speeds
