KB3045171 (May 2015) backup failures on Windows 2008 guests

Hi,

Just a feedback from my Veeam infra. (veeam 8u2, hyper-v R2 cluster, vss hardware provider equallogic)

Since Microsoft Patch Tuesday May 2015 my backup jobs give snapshot errors for guest system Windows 2003,2008 and warning status for 2008 R2 because hardware vss failed on first try.

I have uninstalled KB3045171 and it's fixed ! Green is back on my reports ^^

Jeremy, thanks for sharing, much appreciated. Though if you could open a case and upload logs of the failed jobs for review, we could track them down to possible reasons of this behavior.

We were able to reproduce this internally, at least on Windows 2008 VM. Will continue investigating.

This turned out to be caused by some service not being able (after installing this update) to properly respond to our request for its configuration during guest preparation. Only Windows 2008 VMs are affected (VMs with other OS's in your case were just in the same shared snapshot that failed due to the issue with Windows 2008).

We are going to create a KB article with possible workarounds and probably also will approach MS with this.
