Backup fails on Windows 7 x64 computer

Post by MatBerg »

Hello Everybody,

Endpoint backup on my computer unfotunately fails withe the following error:

Code: Select all

08.06.2015 14:55:21 :: Error: Failed to create snapshot: Backup job failed. Cannot create a shadow copy of the volumes containing writer's data. VSS asynchronous operation is not completed. Operation: [Shadow copies commit]. Code: [0x8004231f].
Windows Event log has (actually the text is in german, translated by me, so the wording in the original event might be a bit different):

Code: Select all

Source: volsnap
event ID: 23
There is not enough space on Volume "\\?\Volume{76296b4e-dc16-11e3-a848-806e6f6e6963}" to create a shadow copy of Volume D:. The creation of the shadow copy failed.
"\\?\Volume{76296b4e-dc16-11e3-a848-806e6f6e6963}" leads to the 100 MB System-reserved volume.

D: is a 2 GB FAT 32 Partion "HP_TOOLS", created by HP System software. Ithas only some 25 MBs used space. C: has around 30% free space (55 GB).

I have found http://www.veeam.com/kb1794, but unfortunately on windwos 7 I do not kave DISKSHADOW to follow the proposed solution. Also, shadow copy configuration works diferent then explained in http://www.veeam.com/kb1846.

Any Ideas? Thank you!

Hello,

It looks like Windows VSS writer cannot create a snapshot of the computer image for this volume, thus your backup job fails. Are you trying to do entire computer backup? What if you switch to volume level backup, does it work for you?

Thank you!

Hi MatBerg,

In addition, please open a support case via Endpoint Control Panel > Support > Technical Support and post here the case ID. You could also check the exising vss configuration via CMD > vssadmin list shadowstorage and share the output here. Thanks

switching to volume level backup and exluding the "HP Tools" partition worked. as I do not really need a backup of that this is fine for me. Thank you! As I'll not be availaible for some time soon, there's no use opening a support ticket at this point.

Still, here the result of vssadmin list shadowstorage:

Code: Select all

C:\>vssadmin list shadowstorage

Thanks for the provided info! I realized that the partition in the question was a FAT partition which is not supported for VSS thus should be excluded (or backed up without the VSS) during entire computer backup automatically. If it’s possible, please, create a case because I still need the application logs to identify the root of this issue and fix it in the next versions.

Great. Thanks again for your fast help. I am impressed by your support for a free product. I have experienced a lot worse for software I had to pay a fortune for.
