backup proxy vs wan accellerator

Post by guichar »

Hi happy veeam users ,

I have some questions about veeam proxy on remote site backup and/or replication.

My company have 3 remote sites, let's say central, remote, storage.
We got esxi servers in central site and remote1. Remote2 is only used as backup storage site.
My goal is to optimize transferts between sites :
  • central site backups to local disks and to storage site on an physical windows server
  • remote site backups to central site (CIFS on NAS)
I use Veeam V8 u2a Enterprise

For now, i deploy one backup proxy on each site. And jobs are only backup jobs (not backup copy, no replication, etc.). Performances are poor.

Q1 :
Are backups proxies used to optimise storage access (reading data and writing backup data) and "used" to optimize wan transfert between 2 proxies (as little it can be and obviously only on replica jobs) ? Official doc is not very clear for me about that.

Q2 :
In case it's only for storage access does what is the best veeam backup arch : 3 wan accelerators, one on each site, use only backup copy jobs (not backups) for exporting backup out site ? Are there other options ?

Thanks for your help. Ask me for more informations needed !
Gui.

Hello, welcome to the Veeam Community.

First of all, what are the bottleneck stats for those jobs? Do all jobs suffer from poor performance (even the local ones in the central site)? Does the CIFS repository have gateway server specified in its settings? What kind of connection do you have between sites?

Hi,
thanks for your reply.

Bottleneck is generaly network or target, depending on days an many factors. Job on central site do not suffer any perf issues. CIFS have indeed gateway server specified.
For bandwith stats : central site : 20M, storage site : 10M, remote site : 10M.

In cases where network is the bottleneck, using backup copy jobs with WAN acceleration could work for you.
