network and port info

Post by koenj »

Hi,

Can you explain what exactly the 'run server on this side' and 'data transfer options' do?

The way I think it works is:
for backup:
* source host = esxi -> service console connection is used so neither of these options have any effect
* source host = esx -> agent is deployed to source esx host. depending on the 'run server on this side'-option, the port range defined in 'data transfer options' is being connected to in the direction of the server.

For replication:
the same as for backup ?

Additionally, is there a document somewhere listing the ports used by a veeam setup for the most common (if not all) scenarios ?

Thanks,

Koen.

Hi Koen,

Actually, everythnig depends on what backup/replication mode you've chosen. For example, if you're using vStorage API mode there are no agents installed in the COS at all for both ESX and ESXi hosts.

Please have a look at our User Guide for a detailed explanation of all the modes. As for the ports list please also have a look at the guide (page 24):
http://www.veeam.com/veeam_backup_4_1_user_guide_pg.pdf

Additionally, you can find some best practices for different setups at our Evaluator's Guide: http://www.veeam.com/veeam_backup_4_0_e ... ide_pg.pdf

Hope it helps! Thank you!

This setting controls Veeam data transfer agents communication. It is only relevant when you are backing up to a Linux target, or using Network processing mode (3rd radio button on processing modes wizard step). Network mode is only left in the product for compatibility and upgrade reasons, you should really be using vStorage API processing modes in all cases but rare exception (ESX 3.x with local storage).

Hope this helps!
