Alarm Reboot/restart VM hyper-v

Post by adrianIDC »

Hello.
I'm setting any alerts Veeam ONE and I'm reviewing the different alarms for Hyper-V VM . As I need an alarm when a Hyper-V VM restarts.

I go to Alarm Management> All Alarms > Hyper-V > Virtual marchine .
But I find nothing related Reboot the machine.

Thanks!

Hello Adrian,

There is no such a predefined alarm for now(we`re planning to add it though), however you can create a custom alarm with event-based rule, using event name 18512 Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Worker.

The event is happened every time a vm is restarted.

Thanks!

Nice question, Adrian.

ID 18512 reacts toward Reset by host, while ID 18514 toward Reset by guest.
If you want to monitor both types, you need to set both rules for the alarm. Thanks!

I set the alarm for restart.

I have simulated the restart caused such VM and if TASK & EVENTS appears in INFORMATION type .

However, in the Alarms tab does not appear.

The alarm I wish it were ERROR or WARNING type and have configured this way but not receive mail notification.

In Alarm configure options

In TASKS&EVENTS:

In ALARMS only appears WARNING alarm:

I`ve double-tested in my lab and it works fine. Your configuration looks correct as well.

Just a few checkings:
1. Make sure you typed Event name exactly like it is written in Event details in "Tasks and Events"
2. In the alarm rules, set trigger after = 0

If it`s also ok, try to add another rule with event 18512 and make restart by host.

Let me know if it works. If no, it makes sense to contact Veeam support for the logs investigation.
Thanks!

Hi!

According to my results .... Only I receive e-mail notifications from a predefined alarm : Performance data collection failure.

As you can see in the picture below , change the icon type of alarm so I question if it is well established or just e- mail alerts alarms of the same type ( with bell ) and the alarm for VM Hyper-V it's OK definited in hosting the VM host.

The alarm set for Hyper - V does not receive any notice. Only appears in the TASK & EVENTS tab.

Thanks!!!

There is no behavioral difference between alarms of different types. They divided to groups for your convenience.
The alarm should work if you point the correct event name and settings despite the type.

In your case, having the record in Tasks & Events, the corresponding record should also be shown in the "Alarms" tab. Please contact Veeam support for the issue investigation.
I`ll also take into account the necessity to create the predefined alarm for future releases! Thanks!

I looked at the event viewer Hyper- v and I find that the record is not called as they say it ends / Admin .
Image

I set the alarm to this end to see if I answered yes .

BEFORE: 18514 Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Worker
AFTER: 18514 Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Worker-Admin

I will comment in brief

Adrian, try to clear "event text" field in the alarm settings, since alarms are being triggered according to a logical "AND" rule with Event name and Event text.
Let me know if it helps. Thanks!

Good news!
Yes, Shestakov, deleting the contents of the Event Text box now if it appears in the Alarms tab  .

The only thing that still does not send me e- mail of such notice.

For example, Failure Conection Host.....

Let's say I receive only e- mail notifications of alerts that affect HOST and not affecting the VM.

I changed to WARNING alarm type for the alarm.
It confirms the change, but I still receive emails from it.

Glad we found the issue with the alarm notifications. Regarding email, do you receive emails in cases of other alarms? Have you customized this one the same way?
Thanks!

Could you specify the issue, please?

In the predefined alarms you can only choose the thresholds for Warning and Error. By default predefined errors are to be sent in both warning and error conditions("Actions" tab). Thanks!

Hi Shestakov,

Do you know if the predefined alarm for Guest VM's Reboots is available for Hyper-v?

Hi Juan! For now, no. The way to create it manually is described in the thread. We are planning to make the alarm predefined for the next versions.
Thanks!
