Linux Debian 8 - VM Tools

Post by dahuafschmied »

hello,

do NOT use the vmware recommended open-vm-tools in debian 8. (Case #00899407)
install the original vm tools from vmware.

veeam does not identify the vm (debian 8 ) as linux with open-vm-tools. -> guest file indexing does not work.

Hi Markus,

Just to make sure I understand the question - do you want Veeam to support open VM tools?

Thanks!

HI Vitaliy,

short: yes! :-)

VM tools installed on linux are a real pain in the a..!
you have to maintain them (install manualy, recompile on os updates, ...)
also vmware recommends not to use them and use open-vm-tools for linux.

the problem is that open-vm-tools detect guest os type "otherGuest", when native vmware-tools detects "other3xLinux64Guest".

Yes, that's the problem of these tools, as they can't report a proper guest OS type to VMware MOB. This property should be populated with data by VMware/open source tools, so that we could apply our special logic for indexing and other tasks.
