Pls check my new backup set-up

Post by Wocka »

Hello,

I'm about to deploy Veeam V8 and a new Dell DR4100 de-dupe device. Can you please go over my thoughts for a recommended solution. There is currently no backup running on this new environment.

Set-up
3 x IBM Hosts with 10GB ethernet connections (there are spare NIC's on each host for a new backup subnet)
VMWare 5.5
Virtual SAN is configured on the hosts
Dell DR4100 as a backup repository

Currenty the environement has 10 servers deployed, this is looking at increasing to 25-30 by the end of the year.
My thoughts are to increase the Proxy servers as more virtual servers are brought on-line to reduce backup times.

Proposed Solution
  • 1 ) Set-up a new VMNetwork called "Backup", IP Subnet 10.0.10.0
    2 ) Build a virtual W2K8 Server (8GB RAM/2 CPU)for the Veeam Management Server, IP 10.0.10.1
    3 ) Build a virtual W2K8 Server (8GB RAM/8 CPU) for the Veeam Proxy Server, IP 10.0.10.2
    4 ) Add a second network card to the Proxy Server and place in the current iSCSI network, IP 10.0.20.2
    5 ) Configure the DR4100 on the Backup subnet, IP 10.0.10.10
    6 ) As per the Dell/Veeam Set-up guide to use CIFS from the Proxy to the DR4100
    7 ) Set-up the Proxy server to use iSCSI to the vSAN
    8 ) Required firewall ports opened as needed.
Can you see any issues with this proposal?

Hello Warwick,
Your configuration looks good overall.
Are you going to copy backups to a secondary repository by the way?
Thanks!

Hello,

Maybe an interesting read:

The DR4100 is a deduplication device so it fits more in the second tier in our "ultimate backup infrastructure"

Just a note, Veeam B&R server itself can also play (and does, by default) the role of a proxy server. Also, I'm not sure you can use direct SAN with vSAN (if that was your intention), however with virtual proxies you can leverage hotadd mode to retrieve VM data from the source datastore.

Thx for the reply's

@Shestakov
Currently at the moment there will be no off-site DR for this solution. But we may impliment the Dell DR2000 (Virtual appliance of the DR4100) on our corporate SAN in the office to replicate (deduped files) off-site. I would say this is atleast 8+ months away.

@tdewin
I had read that forum post about the DR4100. Sounds like those who use one are 50/50 split to either have it as a seconday "Backup Copy" repository or primary target.

@foggy
Yes I know the Veeam Mgmt server can do both roles, I thought for best performance it's better to split the Proxy onto it's own server?
I am hoping (I think if i understand the technology correctly) to attach the Proxy server via iSCSi to the vSAN for the fastest possible backups.

I'm a little confused if vSAN are supported under VMWare 5.5 and Veeam. So yes I'm trying to set-up Direst SAN Access. as shown here:
https://www.veeam.com/blog/direct-san-a ... oxies.html

Looks Like vSAN isn't supported:
http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/v ... ccess.html

So I can ammend my install and cut out the Proxy server being on the iSCSI subnet (task 4).

Hi,
No vsan is not supported by direct San since VMware VADP libraries do not expose it as such.
The best design for protecting vsan is to deploy one Veeam proxy per node as a virtual machine, to leverage data locality (see http://www.veeam.com/blog/veeam-backup- ... pport.html)
