Netapp NFS proxy backup

Post by sjohnson-scu »

I have 25 VMs running on 3 ESXi 5.5 servers using 2 NFS based Datastores. When the backup runs (3 proxy servers capable of 48 simultaneous backups) it performs about 3/4 of the backups from the netapp snapshots. The remaining run nbd. What am I missing here that can force them all to run from snapshot even if they have to wait?

Backups from Storage Snapshots should wait for all vm snapshots in the same volume in the same job to be completed, are all the vm in one job?
There are also limits on the number of snapshots per ESXi and datastore that can be taken concurrently, but then what's in the queue should wait.
You can try to disable the Failover to nbd in the proxy settings and see if it changes the behavior.

Hi Scott,

Given that all VMs are located on the same volume, then one of the reasons for this behavior could be an existing snapshot on the VM that failover to NBD mode. Can you please verify that you don't have any VM snapshots on those VMs?

Thanks!
