Hi all,
we've been struggling with one of our largest file servers for several months now and it looks like we haven't found the best way to deal with very large incremental VIB files (in the 100-130 GB range in size)... Daily reverse incremental backup jobs used to complete within 6-7 hours in v7 and we were hoping the new Forward incremental feature in v8 could help us with that and free us (partly) from this burden.
Jobs went well for the first few months then they kept running for hours and hours (due to the slow merge process stuck at 99%). So, now backup jobs take longer than ever before.
My question is: how do you deal with very large daily VIB files? Reverse incremental is no longer feasible for us since we cannot afford to leave the snapshot open for so long. On the other hand, forward incremental looked promising but now the merge process is taking 8-10 hours while the underlying backup storage is almost idle. Bear in mind that we keep 10 restore points only for this job!
We also wonder why the Forward incremental jobs ran smoothly for the first few months (less than 3 hours for real backup & merge) and now they look so degraded and painfully slow.
Thanks!

Re: How to deal with large VIB files
Could you please describe your setup in a bit more detail, particularly the repository part (what type, what kind of storage)? Are you running v8 Update 2?
There are a couple of existing topics regarding similar issues:
v8 slow incremental backup merge: call for support cases
Merging oldest incremental Backup is painfully slow with v8
Worth checking them and contact support for a closer look at your setup in case none of the hints apply.

Re: How to deal with large VIB files
Yes, we're running v8 Update 2b (8.0.0.2030) and the backup server has its own local volumes mapped to a NetApp FAS2240 storage (iSCSI - 48 SATA drives). This setup has been working without a glitch for 2 years now, we've only been struggling with this large file server because of the size of the daily VIB files. Forward incremental looked good but performance degraded after 2 months or so...

Then I suggest opening a case.
