Deduplication among several proxies

Post by Luca82 »

Hi everyone, I was wondering if having more than one proxy could worse the deduplication effect. So for example, if I have 2 VM to backup within the same backup job, and each VM is processed by 2 different proxies (due to parallel processing/load balancing) the 2 proxies are not able to duplicate the similar blocks between the 2 VMs....is it correct? Conversely, if I have only one proxy, it is able to duplicate the similar block between the 2 VMS....

Hi Luca,

The number of proxy servers used does not affect deduplication for VMs being processed. If we are talking about incremental job runs, then unique data blocks for every VM are transferred, so parallel processing should definitely be used if you want to have a smaller backup window.

Thanks!

Thank you very much Vitality. Let me do another question...
If I haven't a LNX repository but, for example, a QNAP repository (in which I can't install the Target Side Transport Service), can I use the same repository for both the proxies? And, in the same way, are the 2 proxies able to share the information between them about identical blocks?

Yes, you can do that. Keep in mind that the deduplication on the target side (repository) is done within the restore point and it doesn't depend on the repository type. Hope this helps!
