'file to tape' job very slow

Post by bar971 »

Hi all,

I've upgraded VBR from 7 to 8 + patch 1. I've read about the better performances using tape in new version but when I try a 'file to tape' back up the processing rate stay always at 1MB/s with bottleneck at source (5 hours for 10GB of mixed size files!!!).
When I do a 'backup to tape' the processing rate is good: 100MB/s.

The hardware is a server blade HP ProLiant BL460c G6 with a hp lto ultrium 5 SAS (direct attached in a HP enclosure c7000)

Someone have some suggestion?

Thanks

Hello Christian,
10GB of mixed size files
Out of curiosity – what is the average size of the files (or min/max size) and the exact number of files in the source? Any chance storage dedupe is enabled in the location where the said files reside?

Hi d.popov,

the size can vary from some byte to 100MB or more (what I do is the backup of c: *.* of a server )
Dedupe is not enable.
The processing rate of 1mb/s is on both the local tape ( veeam server) and in the proxy tape server.

Thanks.

Got it - thank you. Compression / encryption enabled?

encryption disabled. Compression hardware enabled or disabled things do not change.
Using a third part backup tools the processing rate is always ~100MB/s.

Since there is no obvious reason regarding difference in speed between different tape jobs, please, keep working with the support team and let them find out the problem, once required logs are analyzed. Thanks.

Christian,
Need a small clarification: tape library is connected via tape proxy or directly to the VBR?

[MERGED] Backup to tape transfering rate

Post by dsilva »

Hello,

I'm using VB&R V8 update 2b and i created a backup job (file to tape) to backup local files to a local tape driver (SAS - LTO5). The server is a VM Server (Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard) in ESXi 5.5 Host.

The transfer rate to this job is about 11Mb/s, to a local server i think is a worse performance, anybody can help me to get a better performance?

The server is a file server with 250Gb to backup and takes about 8 hours to complete the job.

Thanks and sorry about my english.

Hello and welcome to the forums!
Could you clarify, are we talking about File-to-tape job or Backup-to-tape job? Could you provide your bottleneck statistics (Load: Source > Proxy > Network > Target )?
In general File-to-tape works much slower if dealing with a vast number of small files. Do you also have a huge number of files? Thanks!

Hello,

Thanks to reply.

We are talking about file to tape job. The bottleneck statistics is:

Load: Source 79% > Proxy 0% > Network 0% > Target 0%

Is a file server, hava a lot of files, but the average rate of this last backup was 8Mb/s , and is a local tape drive connect via SAS with de VB&R.

File server has 70134 directories and 816236 files to backup, about 235Gb.

Is this normal?

Thanks again.

If I were you, I would open a support ticket and let an engineer confirm your environment and whether or not the experienced performance is expected. Thanks.

Slower speed for types of source you described is expected, however, anyway 8Mbps seems too slow. Besides opening a support case, as Vladimir suggested, I would try to archive the files and backup a single file to check if the difference will be significant. Thanks!
