Truecrypt and VSS Error 0x8004230f

Post by lp@albersdruck.de » 1 person likes this post

Hi!

This is just for your information, maybe somebody else has the same problem and can use this solution:

I use Truecrypt to encrypt a small drive on one of our servers for sensitive personal data.
So far there have been no problems at all when backing up with Veeam B&R 7.

After the upgrade to v8, the job with that server fails with error in Veeam:

Code: Select all

 10.11.2014 02:26:07 :: Error: VSSControl: -2147212529 Backup job failed.
Discovery phase failed.
Cannot add volumes to the snapshot set.
Cannot add a volume to the snapshot set. Volume name: [\\?\Volume{8f3c0eff-87d2-11e2-86fc-000c2934ae53}\].
Cannot check whether volume supported by the system software provider.
VSS error: VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR. Code:0x8004230f
And this is shown in the Application Log (Event Viewer) on the server:

Code: Select all

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error calling a routine on a Shadow Copy Provider {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}. Routine details Cannot ask provider {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5} if volume is supported. [0x8000ffff] [hr = 0x8000ffff, Catastrophic failure
].
...
After searching for this error I found the solution that has so far worked:
  • Dismount the Truecrypt Volume.
  • In Truecrypt Settings/Preferences, enable "Mount volumes as removable media".
  • Mount the Truecrypt Volume.
VSS works again and my backup job runs fine without errors.

Hello, after this change, backup of mounted Truecrypt volume finishes without error. The file level restore does not find this backed-up volume, so I'm unable to restore just one file. The whole drive would maybe work...
