DD: vTL vs NAS

Post by nokogerra »

Hello there.
I am new to Veeam and I`m looking for advice.
We are going to purchase EMC Data Domain for keeping backup, and there is a question: how to use it? I mean like vTL over FC or NAS over Eth. I found this http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/v ... pport.html but I don`t really know is there any difference between features of Veeam using vTL vs NAS? For clarity: does Veaam with NAS provide more features than:
Tape device support
Veeam Backup & Replication provides the following capabilities:

▪Archiving data to tape
•Archiving VM backups
•Archiving user files of all formats
▪Restoring data from tape
•Restoring VMs from tape to infrastructure
•Restoring VM backups to disk
•Restoring files to any server or folder
•Restoring 3rd party backups
or it provides the same features for vTL and NAS?

Is there any recommendations for Veeam of what type of storage is preferable?
Also I am curious, does Veeam7 support vTL too with the same way (we got Veeam7 and Veeam8, but I couldn`t find info about 7, sorry)?

P.S. Can anyone suggest good book for studying Veeam8 (vSphere)? Or may be User Guide for VMware Environments is good enough (though it`s pretty extensive)?
P.P.S. Sorry for my bad English.

Hi,

Generally speaking, tape features are better for long-term archiving. For backups I'd stick to NAS repository as it provides more features in terms of backup scheduling, copying, management. Please also refer to this post. Please take a look at this blog, and this article - it's worth checking.

Thank you.

With a DataDomain you would be best to use DDBoost storage.
Veeam Backup has support for this in version 8 & 9.

Agree. I’d treat DD VTL as a bonus functionality and completely rely on a NAS functionally instead.
