Looking for Advice and Insights on a Scenario with Tape

Post by skydok »

Hi,
So i'm having a customer that i decided to think about 4 Jobs seperated. They are seperated per OS.
Currently they have SINGLE JOB ALL-IN-One. which i don't like because you can't do fine tuning per VM.

Currenty as is said they do : ONE-JOB -> Secondary Tape > Finished - 2 Steps
I want : Four Jobs - > Secondary Tape - > 2 Steps

The tihng is that currently the current way uses only ONE (1) Tape .
Wehn tried to seperate Jobs to TWO (2) it seperetated it to ALSO to TWO (2) Tape .

If the Amount of DATA is the Same , how should i approch it to still keep SINGLE TAPE

What kind of schedule do the backup job have? What about tape one? Are you using standalone drive or robotic library? How the corresponding media pool is configured in terms of mediaset creation options? Thanks.

Iits a libary ,and everything is reconfigureable , so therfore i really don't care what they currently have , we will reconfigure what needs to be done.
But i wanto to keep it a Daily Tape 10:00 AM outside the office.

So at Night the Backups jobs are happening starting 18:00 PM and hoping that after Tape job will start and 10:00 AM the day after take it out the office only a single TAPE

Just a few additional questions - What mode do the source backup jobs use (forward with periodic fulls, forward forever, reversed incremental, etc.)? If it's forward with periodic fulls, how often the latter is created? Are you willing to copy both full and incremental files to tapes or only full ones?

We have the option to choose the currently a new way. We are doing new Source Backup jobs. we can choose Reveresed/Forward.

I would prefer Reversed in this case and copy only full to tapes . Don't forget Each day the customer takes a Tape outside the office...
So he needs to have the ability to Take this Tape and restore 24/H back.

In this case, you'll probably need to:

- Create a media pool
- Enable "Create a new media set for every backup session" media set creation option for it
- Set it whatever overwrite protection period you want to. Just make sure that retention on tapes is longer than retention on disk
- Select "Automatically move offline media to vault" check box and specify a corresponding vault (optional, depends on whether you use vaults or not)
- Create a backup to tape job
- Select 4 backup jobs as its source
- Select the newly-created media pool as its target
- Make it process only full backups
- Schedule it to run on everyday basis

If I got that right, this plan should allow you to achieve what you're after.

Thanks.
