Worth going to 10 GB on Veeam Server and QNAP storage?

Post by sdelacruz »

My backups have been growing tremendously during the past few months. I am really considering upgrading my Veeam Backup Sever to a 10 GB NIC that direct connects also to a 10 GB NIC on my QNAP storage array. My question is the following. Will this improve the speed at all? My hosts still have only 1 GB and the Equallogic storage arrays where the VMs are are also 1 GB.

Hi,

What's the bottleneck in your jobs? Please also describe the backup policy you use.

Thank you.

most of my backups are the source
Job1
10/14/2015 1:50:04 AM :: Load: Source 80% > Proxy 52% > Network 34% > Target 33%
10/14/2015 1:50:04 AM :: Primary bottleneck: Source

Job2
10/14/2015 4:02:28 AM :: Load: Source 99% > Proxy 45% > Network 0% > Target 1%
10/14/2015 4:02:28 AM :: Primary bottleneck: Source

I have about 15 jobs.

Currently using Forward Incremental with Synthetic Fulls on Saturday. I run my jobs all days.
I like to keep 7 restorepoints on disk.

"Source" bottleneck means that the storage where VMs reside at is slowing down the process. Also which transport mode do you use?

Currently uses CBT transport mode.
Most of my Vms now reside on 2 Dell Equallogic Arrays. Both are connected with 1 GB connections to ESX hosts on their own network.

my Veeam server is a physical server with internal storage and a direct connect qnap storage device where I place my backup files.

Well, there is no such transport mode, sorry. :) I meant which one of these modes do you use?

Also, do you have any extra proxies aside you VBR?

O I am sorry.

My Hosts Connect to our Dell Equallogic via 1GB iscsi.

My VBR Physical Server has access to the Storage Network Equallogic via 1GB isci. This is also my proxy server

Do you have anything selected in "VMware Backup Proxy" proxy "Transport Mode" settings? Is it "Automatic Selectiom", "Direct SAN" or "Network"? What transport mode is reported in job log, san, nbd, hot-add? (log example below)

Code: Select all

:: Using source proxy VMware Backup Proxy [san;nbd]
:: Using target proxy srvsmtpproxy.test.local [nbd]
What's the disk read speed (MB/s) reported in job log?

Then adding 10GB link between your backup server and target repository will not improve your speed because your bottleneck is source (primary storage).

Thank you.

O OK.

Is there a way to improvement thought put? My backup jobs keep growing daily I do not know what will happen in a few months with my backup window. I have over 25 different jobs that I run from 7 PM to 5 AM.

Instead of placing 10 Gbit adapter between Veeam and QNAP I'd rather increase the bandwidth between Equallogic and Veeam Server - 1 Gbit is not much and it seems that your connection got saturated.

What kind of read speed do you see for VM disks in the job session log? How many jobs are run concurrently against the same source?

READ speeds are from 45-50 MB/s

@Ptide, do you mean I would have to migrate my Equallogic to 10 Gbs? That would be a very costly upgrade.

As you said - your bottleneck is source, 1Gbit connection allows you to hit 120Mb/s when fully utilized so I suspect it's your storage what makes things slow. Please take a look at this thread and check drivers and firmware on your production storage and switches.

Thank you.
