Backup Copy and SQL Log Backup

Post by CurtLeCaptain »

A question about SQL Log backups - we've got backups and SQL log backups going to a standard disk array, then we do a backup copy job that sends the backup to an EMC Data Domain. Does the backup copy job parse the SQL backups as well, or do I need some other mechanism to send those point-in-time recoveries to the Data Domain?

Hi,

No, unfortunatley Backup Copy Job does not send point-in-time recoveries to target, however there is a workaround.

Thank you.

Following-up on that, is there a way to target just files of type VLB for the file copy job?

Unfortunately, there is no way how you can do that with gui, some powershell scripting might be required. Anyway, including .VLBs only would be impractical because you would not be able to apply those transaction logs to a backup copy restore points.

Really. So I have to use file copy (via powershell) to move the entire backup chain to the Data Domain? Am I correct in saying that?

Correct. Actually, you can use any tool of your choice to perform such operation since it's just copying.

Final question then as a follow-up. Since it's a copy job, am I really going to see a benefit of the DD at all, I s'pose it would give the benefit of dedupe/compress on the DD side, but I'd lose DD Boost featuresets. Is that a correct statement?

Curt, what DD Boost feature sets are you referring to?

Where I've got Veeam using a DD Boost repository. Right now we backup to a local SAN, then we backup copy off to the Data Domain. Right now during transforms I see the client-side dedupe of DD Boost happening.

Ah, got it. File copy jobs do not utilize DD Boost integration.
