is it possible to see what backup sets are on a tape?

Post by fredbloggs »

Realise I can go through all my backups and see what tape they are on, however wondering whether there is a way to do it quickly in reverse.

Reason being someone moved a tape into the free pool before realising it shouldn't have been. Reverting it to the previous pool seems to have restored something in the database but It states it is from a particular backup set but when checking the backups at that time none of them state they are on that tape.

Powershell would be preferable if nothing in the UI is possible.

so it looks as though you can see the properties of the tape and the files that are on it.

Mine is showing as no files on that tape and have tried a catlog / inventory.
As for this query, guess I know the answer to that.

Have a support ticket to look at that one.

Any chance files were partially written on this tape? To be able to see such files, you need to catalog all the tapes from the corresponding backup set (all tapes used during the corresponding job run).

ok, i've reinserted all the tapes from the backup set.

It's still cataloging the first tape after 22hours, since there are 5 tapes am I expecting it to take a week to catalogue them all?

so, in the end I stopped the Veeam services (since stopping the catalog didn't work) and restarted the server.

Lo and behold, upon a restart I checked the tape it had been cataloging and the 20 files that I'd expect are all there. Posting this in case anyone else has a catalog that is taking far too long.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Catalogue operation might be indeed time consuming since the drive is going to read the full tape on a block level.
