Wan Accelerator and Pre Populating Misandertanding

Post by meua »

hello everyone
i 've have some probleme to understand how pre populating works...
here is our config

Main Office
bkp1
repo 1,2,3 with all backups
vcenter of production

wan 20mb between

Backup office
bkp2
no repo
vcenter of backup

we tried replication directly from our main office backup repo direcly to the "backup-vcenter" it works well

now we try to use wan accelerator.
so we make cache folder.
now we pre populate the target. here is what i don't understand: on the target (backup office) what repo should i use ?
in the actual config i ve the only choice of "main office repo" because there is no repo at the backup office.
should i select repo 1,2,3 of the main office for the target ?
is it the good config ? or should i do otherwise ?

Should i create repo at the backup office ? replicate the backup from main office repo to backup office repo and then put it in the vcenter ?
should i keep replicating directly to the backup office vcenter ?

thanks for your help

Actually there is no point to populate cache from production to backup site over WAN. The purpose of cache population is to prevent sending data over the link in case when the same data is laready on the the other side. The better option would be to create a repository on your backup site, place backups of VMs that are subject to replicate there and populate target cache from target repo.
replicate the backup from main office repo to backup office repo and then put it in the vcenter ?
That depends on your RTO. However it'd be better to have some backup restore points on the backup site + replicated VM in the backup vCenter.

Thank you.
