Question about backup copy

Post by bensaida »

Hello everyone, I setup a backup copy job that backs up to a remote repository 4 vms.
I noticed the space being eaten fast. After looking at the repository from the windows explorer I saw that I had almost for every day an incremental and a full.
All I want is a full and forever incremental but I don't see an option for this.
Thanks

Hello Said,
By design it should work just like you want to.
Are all those full backups created by that backup copy job?

By the way, backup copy job doesn`t backup, but just copies existing restore points.
Thanks!

Hi bensaida,
are you using active full backup on your backup job ?
backup copy does copy only your backup files nothing else.

Can you tell us what retention settings does the backup copy job have? Is GFS enabled?

It shouldn't matter, as backup copy job is using forever incremental mode.
backup copy does copy only your backup files nothing else.
Backup copy job doesn't t copy backup chain as a whole, but rather synthetically creates required restore points in "target" location from VM data in source backup repositories.

Thanks.

Job: copy every day
Restore points keep 5
Restore points for archival purposes: 4 weekly backups/14 monthly.

Where can I confirm if GFS is enabled?
Thanks.

This is GFS retention.

Basically, with these settings you should have a regular backup chain consisting of an initial full (VBK) and four subsequent increments (VIB) and weekly/monthly restore points as separate fulls. If you observe something different, feel free to contact support for a closer look at what happens.
