Waiting for Back to Finish

This may seem like an obvious question but in a dev/test environment for example, if i am performing a backup prior to a major upgrade obviously best practice is to wait until it finishes successfully before beginning the work. Technically though do I need to wait for the backup to finish prior to making the changes. From the link below:

And from my general understanding once the backup begins Veeam should be making a snapshot and locking it from any changes. If i begin performing the work prior to the backup finishing and something goes wrong to the point where I need to perform a restore, as long as that backup finishes successfully i should be able to do so without any issues correct?

And what if for any reason the backup doesn't finish correctly and you end up with an unusable restore point?
I would wait for the backup to finish and be sure I have a restore point. You can also use Veeam quick backup to have a faster point backup of the single vm you need, so you don't need to run a job that maybe has many VMs in it.
