EMC DataDomain OS and DD Boost plug-in compatibility

Post by DeadEyedJacks »

Hi,

With VB&R version 8 the DDBoost plug-in shows as version 2.6 which according to EMC doc 51631 is compatible with DataDomain OS versions between 5.2 and 5.5

The latest DataDomain OS version is now 5.7 which is compatible with DD Boost plug-in versions 3.1 and 3.2

So can anyone confirm the DD Boost plug-in version within VB&R version 9 ?

And what's the situation with continuing to use VB&R v8 with DataDomains with OS versions 5.6 and upwards?
Is this tested and would it be supported by both Veeam and EMC ?

Thanks in advance
David

David, v9 will support DD Boost 3.0, which is compatible with DD OS 5.4-5.6.

Thanks Alex,
OK, we have some new DDs on order which may well arrive with 5.7 OS.
What's the situation with VBR v8 & v9 working in combination with them?

5.7 will not be supported in these releases in terms of DD Boost. You will be able to use CIFS shares though.

Not to stir the pot or be the devil's advocate, but I've recently upgraded a set of my old 620's w/ 5.7 and it has suddenly become stable and reliable w/ latest v8. Historically all our 620's and 2200's have been atrociously unreliable until 5.7. Basic options all around, no Boost or anything on any of them though.

DD Boost to DD OS version mapping is not very strict indeed. I discussed this with EMC recently, and basically it is up to backup vendor to test "unofficial" combination and support that. As long as DD Boost does not attempt to trigger discontinued (or not yet implemented) DD OS functionality, there will be no issues. We are planning to spend some time on DD OS 5.7 testing once v9 is released.

The reason we are so conservative with DD Boost SDK versions is because we want to ensure largest overlap in terms of "official" support. We chose to use DD Boost 3.0 for now because it still supports DD OS 5.4, which has a huge footprint still.

Having said that, one thing we immediately don't like about 5.7 is that we seem to have lost the Enterprise Manager where you can see all your other DD's on one management console. I haven't yet found that in whatever revision of 5.7 we're running on one set of our DD's. I'll be trying previous revisions until I find the last-know that kept EM. While it's far more stable than older major revisions, they did take away a lot of features that were useful.
