Multi Backup Copies

Post by nholman »

Hi all

i have asked this question to support but still waiting so thoguht i would ask here as well.
I want to have offiste copies using backup copy but getting mixed results at the moment. I will give an exmaple fo what im trying to achieve.
Lets say we have SERVER1. I backup SERVER1 daily to local disk. From local disk i have backup copy job looking at the SERVER1 job for its virtual machines to backup. the backup copy is set to copy to a dedupe appliance for long term retention. However, i would like to have a second backup copy job to also copy that SERVER1 backup to ANOTHER dedupe appliance at another location to allow for even longer term retention where our tape library is. Is this possible or are the two backup copy jobs going to conflict or get confused by thinking its already took a backup copy of the latest vm data. any help around this would be great. thanks

Nick, you can either have two backup copy jobs using the same backup chain as source (the will not confuse each other, but operate independently) or have the second backup copy job using backups created by the first one as a source. Both approaches should work fine.

hi thanks

so you are saying the below:

Backupcopy1 = Source Auto
Backupcopy2 = Source Auto

or

Backupcopy1 = Source Auto
Backupcopy2 = Source Dedupe Repo

Is that right?

Can the backup copy jobs be run at the same time?

Yes, I meant that the scope for the second copy job could be either the backup job or the target repository for the first copy job.

Backup copy jobs can be both enabled and run according to their scheduling/backup window settings.

thanks

ill go with option 1 and create 2 backup jobs with different target repo's and leave the source repo as default and let it seelct the latest data. ill also seelct the backup job as the source on the both. see how that pans out overnight.

Hi

that hasnt really worked - one backup copy says the full backup is incomplete and another says latest restore point is already copied.
the backup was set to run at 7pm. the backup copies set to run at 8pm - well in time for it to see new backup copies.

i would expect to see the same data on each backup copy but im definitley not seeing that.
