Poor Dedup Ratio with HP StoreOnce VSA

Post by hirratas »

Hello
first of all sorry for my English.

I am using the Hp Storeonce VSA (free 1TB).

On the Screenshots you can see the config in Veeam.

My problem is the poor Dedup Ratio of Veeam (1.0) and of HP VSA (1.1).

Maybe someone can tell me if I configured something wrong.

Thank you very much.

I do not see any screenshots. Are you probably looking on the incremental Veeam B&R job run, when only changed blocks (which are likely to be unique) are transferred?

Screenshots added. On the Backup repository the full and incremental Backups are stored. So, yes, also incremental.

Also, I'm wondering how your job and repository settings look like (say, is data decompression enabled or not, etc.). By the way, do you have Catalyst license in place?

Hi, can you now see the Screenshots above?
There you should be able to see the job and data repository settings!

What is a catalyst license?
I have Veeam B&R Standard and the free HP Storeonce 1TB Version.

What kind of VMs are added to this job (OS, applications)? Veeam B&R does dedupe between VMs in the job, so chances are they do not have much in common to be deduped.

StoreOnce deduplication will start to shine when you have multiple full backups because it can dedup cross full files (read the whole store). In your screenshot, you only have 1 full and incremental data (which is changed data so expected to be different than the full data).

Have you looked at your StoreOnce VSA Management Consolel? Your will only see your real dedupe ratio over all Backupjobs and Files at your VSA Management Console. Veeam shows obly dedupe ratio of an specific backupjob and not overall if you have more than one job.

Go to your StoreOnce VSA Management Console with https://<ip of your SO-VSA> and login with Admin/<your password>.
Under Storage Report you will see your dedupe ratio over all Shares like NAS, Catalyst etc.

One of our SO-VSAs with 10TB shows the the following:

Actually we use StoreOnce CIFS NAS-Shares, but we are planning to migrate to StoreOnce Catalyst with upcoming Veeam v9.

And if you don't see any dedupe ratio bettet than 1, check if you enabled deduoe on your CIFS NAS-Share.
