Migrating Backup Files needs Long Time
Hello,
I have an big Problem .
I Backup with Endpoint the Volumes of an Physical Server over an 10 Gbit lan to the Repository on an Backup and Replication Server.
Till the retention Time from the Backup is reached the Backup needs for 500 GByte 2 Hours.
But After the retention Time every new Backup Job needs 8 Hours, because Migrating Backup Files needs Long Time.
On the Server i want to Backup is an Volume on which every Day comes 500 gbyte of new Webcam Files to the Volume.
Every Friday i Plan to Backup this Files from Endpoint Backup in the Repository in the Backup and Replication Server to tape.
This needs himself Long Time . But now it is not enough time for Backup to Tape because the Migrating Backup Files from Endpoint needs also Long Time . Together they Need more than 24 Hours.
And therefore the Tape Backup Runs in a new Endpoint Backup Job which cancel the Tape Job.
Knows anyone an Solution ?
Why needs Migrating Files so Long Time ?
Michael

Re: Migrating Backup Files needs Long Time
Hi Michael,
after retention is reached the oldest incremental will be merged into the full backup.
In your scenario we have to merge 500 GB. This could take time. What do you use
as backup repository?
If you would accept that every backup is a Full Backup you can use this command to create a standalone backup via
script. "C:\Program Files\Veeam\Endpoint Backup\Veeam.EndPoint.Manager.exe" /standalone"
This avoid the need of merging backup files.
I'm not sure if this will work with Backup 2 Tape.
Regards
Marco

Re: Migrating Backup Files needs Long Time
Hello ,
I use an Lun on an Netapp FAS which is connected via ISCSI as a Volume on the Backup and Repository Server as Repository for the Backup.
Whats about changing the Blocksize in the Registry in the Endpoint Backup Server ? At the Moment the Registry Setting is 1024.
Is the Migration Time faster when i raise it to 4096 ?
Thanks

Re: Migrating Backup Files needs Long Time
Because Merge Logic is as far as I know the same in Backup & Replication it can result in a better processing speed.
See what our product manager for B&R says to this. But keep in mind that if retention is reached and merge needs to
be done you have 2x IO operation needed. Before it only creates new incremental files.

Re: Migrating Backup Files needs Long Time
Hi,
Since you are using NetApp I suggest you test Endpoint backup to the said Repository with these options disabled: Align backup file data blocks and Decompress backup data blocks before storing

Not sure why it’s happening – can you elaborate how your tape job is configured? ThanksAnd therefore the Tape Backup Runs in a new Endpoint Backup Job which cancel the Tape Job.

Re: Migrating Backup Files needs Long Time
Hey with this Settings in the Repository Options on the Veeam Backup Server the Endpoint Backup now needs only 2 Hours but on Veeam Endpoint i Miss the Point "Migrate Backup Files" which needs the Long Time.
Is the Backup anyway ok ?
