Can veeam backup logs for AlwaysOn Second Replica

Post by Someonenew2014 »

Hi Folks,

We are testing AlwaysON (2014) with Veeam v8.

According to documentation "Logs are backed up for the only one AlwaysOn Availability Group node selected"
http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/v ... pport.html

So Simply Veeam is taking full backup of both nodes primary and secondary replica, However , transaction log backup taken for one node and under specific situation that mentioned in the link above.

My Question.
1- In the recorded Webinar? they mentioned that we can take a transaction log backup for secondary replica?

Webinar
https://www.veeam.com/videos/veeam-micr ... -5939.html

Is that right? If yes, how.

We came into conclusion is that If you have primary and 2 secondary configured with ALwaysOn group

if you run transaction log backup at any one of the nodes it is enough. The AlwaysOn work in mechanism that notify other nodes when Tlog done on one of the nodes.

Veeam is taking the backup on primary/secondary according to backup properties of AlwaysOn AGs under MSSQL

I hope this help.

As one of the authors of the webinar series that you posted, I can confirm your findings.
AlwaysOn Availability Groups log backup algorithm makes sure that log backup can be taken from any replica. After log backup is taken, transaction logs are truncated across all the replicas in a consistent manner.

Backing up transaction logs from a secondary replica is a good way to do load balancing in AlwaysOn and is fully supported by Veeam.

Apologies for bringing up this topic again but there is a certain ambiguity between the Veeam documentation and the quoted webinar, and in the webinar itself.

The question is:
Does Veeam support and manage the following scenario?:
SQL Server AlwaysOn availability group configuration with primary and secondary replicas on each node - i.e. on each SQL Server node there are both primary and secondary replicas.
Can Veeam take the transaction log backups required on both nodes, even though it does a "copy only" backup on each node that has at least one secondary replica (from Veeam documentation)?

Thanks,
ray

Hi Ray, yes, this scenario is supported, logs are backed up. Just keep in mind the recommendation to place both nodes into a single job.
