Windows Server 2012 Deduplication

Post by scollen »

I've got a recurring issue with Server 2012 Deduplication corrupting my backups. I have 7 jobs going to a 6TB Volume over iSCSI with around 40 servers total between the jobs, grouping similar servers together. After about 8-14 days worth of backups is saved the jobs often become corrupt with errors like:

Code: Select all

7/4/2013 10:59:25 PM :: Error: Client error: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
Failed to read data from the file [S:\Backups\Managed Services\Managed Services2013-06-30T012615.vbk].
Failed to backup text locally. Backup: [Prev. backups: "veeamfs:4:cb217116-0cf9-48f4-ac30-a55c86659d0e (vm-168)\TAGAutomation.vmx@S:\Backups\Managed Services\Managed Services2013-07-03T180037.vib";"veeamfs:4:cb217116-0cf9-48f4-ac30-a55c86659d0e (vm-168)\TAGAutomation.vmx@S:\Backups\Managed Services\Managed Services2013-07-02T180033.
I followed the suggestions I've read here and here of how to configure it to work with Veeam but it has happened at least once with each of the 7 jobs, prompting me to delete all the backups for that job and start it over. Should I just split the 6TB volume into smaller chunks and have 1 job per volume? I have a feeling that'll be more reliable but I'd get a lower deduplication rate. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I have not heard similar complaints since the introduction of Windows Server 2012, so please consider underlying storage issues as well...

On my setup after a full backup all my dedup stats zero out. running the dedup job in PS manually finds files to optimize and gets it going again. very odd.

I am having the same issue with files stating they are corrupt after a pass of the Server 2012 dedupe process. I am using an HP P2600 NAS device as the storage platform. Any other suggestions?

I tried a few different arrangements for this but it always eventually failed stating corrupt files. I've since abandoned 2012 De-Dupe all together and so far it has fixed my recurring failures. My underlying storage is a 3 month old Dell Equallogic PS6000 series SAN that is only used for this and isn't reporting any issues. Not sure what's going on here but after following the various guides from Veeam on this I still get failures. It could be a problem with iSCSI since I'm using the standard Windows iSCSI and I've heard of issues with it in the past.

Hi, I'm having the exact same Issue with P6000 SAN Repositories mounted on a Win2012 Server with Dedup enabled:

Code: Select all

05/09/2013 01:50:57 :: Error: Client error: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

Failed to read data from the file [E:\Backup\Win2K8 SQL\Win2K8 SQL2013-08-26T234137.vbk].
Failed to backup text locally. Backup: [Prev. backups: "veeamfs:4:690d4f3d-2f01-4bb7-a981-e17b5d0ddd6e (vm-64335)\ITPRDSQL09.vmx@E:\Backup\Win2K8 SQL\Win2K8 SQL2013-08-29T213200.vib";"veeamfs:4:690d4f3d-2f01-4bb7-a981-e17b5d0ddd6e (vm-64335)\ITPRDSQL09.vmx@E:\Backup\Win2K8 SQL\Win2K8 SQL2013-08-28T213454.vib";"veeamfs:4:690d4f3d-2f01-4bb7-a981-e
I can't tell if dedupe is invovled in this problem but i had 6 Jobs running on this repository. they were running fine until today. Now each Vms in each jobs with this repository as target gives this error.
I tried CHKDSK on the repository, it's fine with 0 errors.
I tried to reboot the Backup Proxy hosting the repository, the issue remains the same.

I opened a case # 00438068 at Veeam Support, They suggested to try an active Full or to backup on another repository.
I tried an Active Full, it seems to work but that doesn't solve my problem, i can't plan an active full every time this problem occurs and restart my backups from scratch. I need to find the cause of this problem to make it fixed.
By the way i'm using Veeam BAckup 6.5 and Windows 2012 Dedup is scheduled from Monday to Friday during Day Time. Backups are scheduled during night time.
Thanks.

Could you please check whether the files from that repository are actually corrupt? Copy one of the VBK files somewhere from the dedupe volume, import it into another Veeam B&R console and try to restore from it.

OK guys.. I dont know if I are at the right forum. But..., My problem was I couln't do FLR restore of files from my w2k12r2 file server (with dedupe enabled) wheh my veeam 8 b&r server was on w2k12 (without r2, but with deduplication feature on). After upgrading veeam b&r server to R2 problem is solved ... :)
