Many VM's dropping packets losing pingstate during rep/back

Post by klasikrkade »

We have MANY VM's that are generating event log errors related to dropping packets or losing pingstates. This seems to be occurring during the backup and replication windows of these VM's.

All jobs are spread over 3 seperate hosts ecah running the backup and replication 4.1.1 software.

Two servers are running backup jobs and one is running replication jobs.

All VM' s are running the latest tools. I have the safe snapshot removal box checked as with this unchecked MANY vms were leaving leftover snapshots and causing all kinds of problems with servers freezing etc.

THe jobs are finishing but these errors are being generated all over the place.

Here is an example of the types of errors being generated.

EVENT # 20
EVENT LOG Application
EVENT TYPE Error
SOURCE EventSentry
CATEGORY Heartbeat Monitoring
EVENT ID 11000
COMPUTERNAME XXXXXXX
DATE / TIME 7/15/2010 11:07:00 AM
MESSAGE Host XXXX (Servers) changed its PING status from OK to ERROR. The reason for the status change was: "75% packets lost".

Any idea as to a potential fix for this type of issue?

Hi Frank,

It sounds like you have those issues while VM snapshot is being removed. Actually "Safe snapshot removal option" should be mostly used with pre-ESX 3.5 U2 hosts. Could you tell us what version of VMware are you running?

Also we've got existing discussions of the same issue, please have a look, should be helpful: VM timeouts during snapshot commit
and Snapshot removal issues of a large VM

Thanks!
