Data Domain Boost Benefits in v9
Hello,
In the v9 what's new document, this is mentioned for Data Domain:
Updated EMC Data Domain Boost 3.0 SDK support is included in v9, enabling DD OS 5.6 support, as well as support for source-side deduplication and data in-fight encryption over the WAN (wide area network) for faster, more secure backups to off-site EMC Data Domain appliances.
What does 3.0 SDK support and source-side deduplication really mean for performance enhancements? One feature that would be very, very useful is to use DataDomain for replication, but controlled by Veeam. Is this supported now?
Thanks!

Hello!
No, controlling replication is not supported. The quoted sentence means that you can now deploy the solution in the way that DDBoost traffic goes over WAN, which was previously not supported by EMC.
The main v9 benefits around Data Domain are faster backups (with per-VM backup file chain options enabled) and faster recoveries (file-level, item-level and Instant VM Recovery).
Thanks!
Anton

Is there a cross reference for compatibility between Veeam B&R versions and DD OS versions? I've searched the KB and forums and haven't found anything.

For backup targets we support the following versions of DD OS:
Release Notes wrote:EMC DataDomain (DD OS version 5.4, 5.5 or 5.6) with DDBoost license. Both Ethernet and Fibre Channel (FC) connectivity is supported.

Is that the same for v9 Update 1? I didn't see any reference in the Update 1 release notes to specific DD OS versions.

Yes, but you can also add DD OS 5.7 to that list now (breaking news from earlier today!)

Is there a link where Veeam describes the support for DD OS 5.7? Any specific version/patch release or one-off update needed to support DD OS 5.7?

Our QC team has informed me that you don't need to install any addition updates/patches to use Veeam with DD OS 5.7.
