V8 latest patch, restore VM without vcenter server on DVS

Post by cdl007 »

hi forum,

i'm have an issue when i try to restore a VM without vcenter server.
Destination network is a DVS on a secondary site to a particular datacenter.
the restoration is ok on a standard vswitch.

Is it a supported scénario ?

edit :
error = restore job failed error object has already been deleted or has not been completely created

I found the solution in this vmware kb, restore a VM when virtual center is down is only possible when the PortGroup is set to Ephemeral.

Although only ephemeral binding allows you to modify virtual machine network connections when vCenter is down, network traffic is unaffected by vCenter failure regardless of port binding type.
Note: Ephemeral port groups must be used only for recovery purposes when you want to provision ports directly on host bypassing vCenter Server, not for any other case

Indeed, ephemeral binding is usually a good solution at least for management clusters, so you can restart every other management VM and reduce downtime. For production VMs, it's usually suggested to guarantee vCenter the needed uptime and manage the production cluster with regular binding.
