Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 with SMB/CIFS

Post by alexc »

Hi there,

I'm using Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 and SCVMM 2012 R2.
Storage: SMB/CIFS to Netapp and QNAP NAS

In this environment, is it possible to use Veeam to backup the VM on Hyper-V server?
Any tricks on setup the Veeam in this environment?

Thanks!

Hi,

Yes, you can backup the VM on Hyper-V. Please check the if you meet basic system requirements. May I ask you what is your concern?

Thank you.

Just a small tip on CBT usage, look through this existing topic for more info > Backing up SMB3 shares hosted on EMC VNX

The problem is I can't backup in this environment now.

I'm thinking is the reason that I'm using the Microsoft Hyper-V Server(Free version), so I can't "Install File Server VSS Agent Service".

I'm trying to install the Win Server 2012R2 now, I just hope I'm in the right track.

Microsoft Hyper-V (Server Core) is also fully supported. Let our technical engineers take a look at your setup and backup job debug logs.

I see that your case is closed already. What was the solution provided by your technical engineer? According to the error message there is an issue with accessing SMB share from the Hyper-V host. How is this share exposed to a host? Do you have all necessary VSS writers installed?

The technical engineer send me the Veeam user guild and ask me to follow that. But I have no idea until now.

Which VSS writer need to install?
How to assign the correct VSS writer to Veeam?

You need to install a VSS writer from your storage vendor, Veeam will automatically pick it up. Once you do this, please follow the recommendations from the topic I've referenced above. Additionally, if you need an assistance with deploying Veeam backup in your infrastructure, you can always ask for help from our system engineer.

Yes, this software comes with your storage vendor software package. Are you able to backup VMs stored on the local storage of your Hyper-V host?

Good, now install hardware VSS provider (NetApp) on the Hyper-V host and add this SMB share to the backup console as it is described in the user guide.

Do you know the software name of Netapp VSS writer?

Am I need to add SMB3 in Veeam backup console?

About the backup proxy, If I install the VSS writer to backup proxy, then I don't need to install the VSS writer to Hyper-V host, is it correct?

You need to add SMB3 server to Veeam B&R console and install hardware provider both on hosts and off-site proxy. Please contact the vendor regarding the exact software you need to install.

In your case Hyper-V host is acting as on-host proxy server, so when you install hardware VSS provider for NetApp device, you will be all set. Alternatively, you can use CSV and software VSS provider (coming from Microsoft).

[MERGED] Off-host backup SMB shares

Post by afdark »

Hi!
I have vhdx files located on SMB share. Virtual machine located on same server. Which VSS provider i need to use for off-host backup?
By default i see only Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0. After adding key UIShowAllVssProvidersForVolume in registry became visible Microsoft iSCSI Target VSS Hardware Provider and Microsoft File Share Shadow Copy provider.

Hi Alex and welcome to the community!

You need to install a VSS provider from the storage vendor.
Please review this thread for additional information. Thanks!

DGrinev, thanks for greeting!
If i use stand-alone rack-mount server with external(discerte) controller then i don't use off-host backup? Because engineers of vendors tell me - VSS hardware provider applies only to SAN devices.

Yes, your hypervisor and the off-host should be connected via SAN to the shared storage.
Please check the following prerequisites in the User Guide. Thanks!

You can use the default VSS provider with SMB shares. You just need to install the "File Server VSS Agent Service" feature on your Scale-Out File Server cluster nodes. Your off-host backup proxy should be a Hyper-V host with access to the SMB shares.

Here's the relevant documentation https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... tml?ver=95

And some more detailed information from Microsoft

If i use Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0 i see error - Unable to allocate processing resources. Error: There is no hardware provider for off-host backup detected. Snapshot failover is disabled.
File Server VSS Agent install. In folder permission window on security tab i added AD computer login off-host backup proxy. Receive same error.

In your backup infrastructure in Veeam, did you add your File Server cluster nodes to the SMB3 section?
