Recovery media won't boot

Post by tz05 »

Hello, I recently started looking into Veeam Endpoint Backup and got a question regarding the recovery media.
I created a USB recovery media including “hardware drivers from this computer” and tried to boot from the stick right away.

The machine boots but gets stuck in sort of a bluescreen with a driver error. Shouldn’t all drivers get added when building the stick?
I tried building a new stick on another machine and tried booting from the stick but ran into the same issue? Seems like I am doing something fundamentally wrong?
Any pointers anyone?

Thanks
Thomas

Welcome Thomas!

Do you have any antivirus installed on the machines you tested?
Did you try and "uncheck" to inject drivers during the restore?

Cheers!

Yes, I am running Windows Defender on both machines and the service was active when I created the sticks. Didn't get any error messages though.
As far as the restore is concerned I don't get far enough to make any selections:
1. Reboot
2. Hit F12 to get to do boot menu
3. Select USB stick
4. The windows logo shows up for a few seconds
5. I get a bluescreen telling me the OS needs a repair

I can take a picture of the bluescreen if it helps?

Thanks
Thomas

When you created the recovery media did you select ISO as the file type, then use a program like Rufus to make it a bootable USB stick?

No separate tool, I used the built-in feature "Create Recovery Media"

The stick ends up beeing bootable but seems to miss drivers which with the settings in my screenshot I would expect to be available?

Hi Thomas,

The original OS is windows 10, right? Can you switch from legacy to UEFI boot mode and try again?

It is indeed Win 10 on both machines.
I'll try UEFI boot mode tomorrow first thing.

Thanks Dima!

Good morning Dima, just tried the UEFI boot, unfortunately with the same result.
The only difference is that it's now winload.efi (instead of winload.exe) which is coming back with an error 0x225

I made another attempt to get to the bottom of my problem. Went through the whole procedure of creating a new stick, reboot...and guess what, it did boot into the recovery environment.
The only thing which changed inbetween tests is the USB stick I used. Is there any dependancy on the USB stick or did I maybe just end up with a faulty one?
The one I tested with previously had 8GB, the one right now was 4GB in size.

Thomas,

Glad you found a solution. Might be a good idea to check this faulty USB stick with chkdsk or any other utility.

Nope. Recovery media can be created on any media, including CD/BD disks and even SD cards.
