v9 Backup Copy to Data Domain - Excellent?

Post by meilicke »

Hello,

In v9, is Data Domain Boost supported over the WAN?

When doing a Backup Copy from one site to another, when the local repository is direct attach disk, and destination repository is a Data Domain, I am seeing direct Boost traffic. I had expected to see Veeam to Veeam traffic.

Topology:

SiteA:
Proxy server: ProxyA
Repository: Local attach to ProxyA
Backup server for all sites: BackupServer

SiteB:
Proxy server: ProxyB
Repository: DataDomain, but I specified any proxy can use it.

We are doing a backup copy from site A to site B. What I expected is:

ProxyA ==WAN==> ProxyB ==LAN==> DataDomain

So the backup protocol over the WAN would be Veeam, and LAN would be Boost.

What I am seeing is:

Proxy A ==LAN==> BackupServer ==WAN==> DataDomain

The WAN traffic is Boost. Now this is great, because the backup copy is going quite quickly since most of the data are already at the destination Data Domain from the v8 days. My transfer rate is about 36 MBps on a 10 MBps link, and only 2 MBps is being consumed by the backup, about 18:1. Go Boost!

So again, while this is working, is it supported? Should I specify in the destination Data Domain repository to only use local proxies? I'm afraid that the steelhead WAN Opt that I have will not work as well as the data domain replication.

Thanks,
Scott

v9 uses DD Boost 3.0 which supports WAN. However, it is still recommended to select the gateway server closer to the actual storage and use Veeam B&R built-in WAN acceleration in the backup copy job.

It is important to keep in mind that supportability for DD Boost over WAN is defined by EMC, not Veeam.

Here's the official WAN link requirements from EMC:
EMC wrote: Boost over WAN – up to supported tolerances

Line Speed - 10 Gb/s
RRT (ms) – 15
Packet Loss % - 0.05%

Requests for anything greater that 15ms requires RPQ.
I doubt there are many companies out there who can boast 10 Gb/s WAN link, so getting the data over WAN using Veeam's built-in WAN accelerators still remains the only option for most.
