How does Veeam work with VMware

For our documentation we want to know how Veeam backup & replicaton works with VMware.
So we want to know the technical side of veeam, Like how it is connected with Vmware and such.

I did some Googleing but could not find such information, is there any written information on this? or would anyone mind explaining it ?
