Tape Testing Tool

Post by hbardowicks »

Hi,

do we offer a generic Tape Testing tool to check the library function and tape speed? I look for something like TapeToolGui from CV or tapeexercise from NW.

I believe there is no universal tool, as those are tape device manufacturer-specific. So, the choice might vary, based on the library/drive you're using. Thanks.

Per support ticket #01715660, your support engineer passed along to us TapeLibTest.exe which we've been using to attempt to flush out our tape speed issues. I don't know anything about the utility, whether it's a Veeam product, from Dell/HP (our hardware setup), etc.
VMware 6
Veeam B&R v9
Dell DR4100's
EMC DD2200's
EMC DD620's
Dell TL2000 via PE430 (SAS)

I must have been slightly wrong. We do have self-written tool (TapeLibTest.exe) available for support team the main use case of which is to measure read from tape/write to tape performance. Thanks.

This would be good to be just packed in the install folder for anyone wishing to diagnose.

I know I haven't been happy with tape speed, so if that was in my install folder I would just go run it and see.

Couldn't agree more, include it with the installer for simple user testing.

It's been primarily implemented for support team. And as every other tool specifically developed for internal use the said tape utility does not have user-friendly interface. Neither does it have detailed documentation.

So, being used outside of support, it has tiny chances to be helpful for end-users.

Anyway, thank you for the feedback; appreciated.
