Traffic IN vs OUT

Hi,

a client of mine is using Veeam B&R. It backups an ESX host to a remote NAS (Synology CIFS share) over a VPN. While evaluation the network usage, we saw that Veeam has about the same traffic out as in. I understand that traffic goes from Veeam to the NAS, but not from NAS to Veeam (besides restores). Is this default behavior (verify or something), and are there recommendations in configuration or architecture to limit the traffic going back from the NAS to the veeam server, as this doubles the traffic?

Do you mean Veeam backup proxy server or VBR? Also does the inbound traffic that you are referring to come from NAS?

Do they have a gateway server on their side, close to the NAS box? Otherwise all synthetic activity is performed over the network.

Hi,

No. They have only a single Veeam server. No proxy or gateway.
All traffic goes directly from veeam to NAS.
So I understand correctly that a gateway had to be added on the NAD side?

Yes, in this case synthetic activity will be performed locally in the remote site, all data between proxy and the gateway servers will be transferred in a compressed format.
