Large vbk file

Post by readie »

I have noticed that we have a vbk file nearly 6TB, though the VM it is backing up is only 3TB. We did, some time ago, fundamentally change the VHD setup, and changed it from a single 3TB HD to 6 x 512GB HDs. After moving the data in windows, we then removed the old 3TB using VCentre. Is this old 3TB VHD still being backed up for some reason?? I can't see it if I browse datastore using vcentre. We made the change weeks ago, and only keep 7 daily restore points for this backup job, so I assumed by now it would have sorted itself?
Is there anything I can do to reduce it's size?

You need to perform an active full for that VM.

That's sorted it thanks. Is it recommended to do this from time to time? I am concerned, for these quite big 3TB VMs, that it will take time and additional HD space as the backup set will, for a while, have two VBK files?

Yes, periodic fulls are recommended and require additional space.
