Application-aware processing questions

Post by UT2015 »

Hi,

I read carefully the manual and the application-aware processing FAQ, but I still am not sure, whether I understood it correctly.

This is how I would configure it:
- one backup job for the vCenter Environment
- "Enable application-aware processing" tagged (for the job)
- vCenter Environment in "Application-Aware Processing Options" (default entry which cannot be removed): Disable application processing

- DC-VM in "Application-Aware Processing Options":
- "Require successful processing" enabled
- Transaction logs: "Perform copy only"
- SQL: "Do not truncate logs"

- Exchange-VM in "Application-Aware Processing Options"
- "Require successful processing" enabled
- Transaction logs: "Perform copy only"
- SQL: "Truncate logs"

- SQL-Server-VM in "Application-Aware Processing Options":
- "Require successful processing" enabled
- Transaction logs: "Process Transaction logs"
- SQL: "Truncate logs"

Is that correct?

Hi,
The settings looks good, despite you didn`t write what your goal was.
If you want to process transaction logs for Exchange, you should enable Transaction logs: "Process Transaction logs".
Thanks!

Oops, I didn't write it correct. This is how I wanted to write it:

- DC-VM in "Application-Aware Processing Options":
- "Require successful processing" enabled
- Transaction logs: "Perform copy only"

- Exchange-VM in "Application-Aware Processing Options"
- "Require successful processing" enabled
- Transaction logs: "Process Transaction logs"
- SQL: "Truncate logs"

- SQL-Server-VM in "Application-Aware Processing Options":
- "Require successful processing" enabled
- Transaction logs: "Process Transaction logs"
- SQL: "Truncate logs"

I am not quite sure which setting is correct for the Exchange-Server on the SQL-Tab. Truncate logs or do not truncate logs?
The settings looks good, despite you didn`t write what your goal was.
My goal is to backup all VMs in the "best way". Best practice for DC, Exchange and SQL Servers is to enable application-aware processing, therefore I'm trying to configure it correctly.

Thanks for the clarification!
Truncate logs or do not truncate logs depends on your needs. What database recovery model do you have(Simple/Full/etc)?
If you enable "Do not truncate logs" option for databases that use the Full or Bulk-logged recovery model, transaction logs on the VM guest OS may grow large and consume all disk space.
By the way, what product version are you at?
Thanks!

Truncate logs or do not truncate logs depends on your needs.
I don't see what this option has to do with an Exchange Server. I think "Process Transaction logs" is the important setting for Exchange Servers, the "SQL"-tab is completely unnecessary for Exchange Servers, isn't it?
By the way, what product version are you at?
I am using the latest B+R 9.0.0.1491

If you want to truncate exchange and sql logs, you need to pick a corresponding section.
So in general your settings look correct.

The "Transaction logs" part in the options is irritating. When selecting "Process transaction logs with this job" this enables Exchange transaction logs and/or SQL Server transaction logs and/or Oracle transaction logs.

It would be more intuitive, if there would be some sub-options when "Process transaction logs" is selected. E.g. sub-options "Exchange Server", "SQL Server", "Oracle". If those sub-options are selected, the corresponding "SQL"- and/or "Oracle"-tabs could be displayed, otherwise not (because if the VM contains an Exchange server only, neither the SQL- nor the Oracle-tab make sense).

Agree. We will take the request into account.
Let me know if the current settings work as expected once you give them a try.
Thanks!
