Poor Upload Speeds - VEB to VBR

Post by Shall1569 »

HI,

Wondering if there are any settings/reg keys that can be used to try and improve or even stablise WAN backups from Veeam Endpoint Backups to a remote Veeam Server?
Just working with sites that have 1MB or lower and getting a lot of "connection Resets" on the job failures

Thanks!

Hi Sam,

What backup mode are you using? Any chance its a file level backup?

Do you have any possibility to create local repositories (for faster restores), point VEB jobs to these repositories and then configure backup copy jobs with WAN acceleration enabled to send backups to your data center? In this case you should see less issues related to connection drops and successfully transfer data over the unstable WAN link.

Correct, this would be a great solution, however the sites we have, have no servers and no external storage.

There are one or two machines per site with 1MB upload speeds in which are backing up to the WAN repo

Trying all possibly solutions to get this working as it works for some sites but not others
I have opened a case with Veeam on 01847662

Ok, got it! Let our support team take a look at the log files, but if the link is unstable, then I'm afraid there is little we can do (assuming it does work for other sites in your case).

In case of unstable links, you could set a local VBR repository (share folder) and set gateway server as a local one - all traffic will flow on-site. Then you can leverage the backup copy job (even with WAN acceleration being enabled) to push all the backups to one location.

If you do not have enough resources at the client side you could use a simple USB drive attached to one of computers and shared across the network.

Thanks guys! What would be the process of setting up a local repo via a USB drive? Would I need to install VBR on one of the users PC's?

Thanks!

Yes, that's correct. Please note that this drive should also be attached to the PC.

Thankyou! And then I can create a backup copy job to then copy all the data over to the central Hosted VBR server using WAN accelerators to enable this to copy quicker

Correct, but if you want to use WAN accelerator, then it should be on both sides (source and target). Start with a regular backup copy job and then proceed with WAN acceleration deployment (if needed).
