Full backup file merge takes long time

Good day everyone,

Recently I install V9 on new server since V8 server failed, I did backup/restore of the jobs to the new server.

One SQL backup job of a 1.6TB VM reports that it takes about 40 mins to process the VM and about 1 hour to "Full backup file merge", backup mode is incremental.

In V8 I did not see that message and the backup usually took about 1 hour total.

Any idea what could be the problem.

Josue, could you please tell more about the job in question, does it use forever forward incremental mode, what is the retention setting and when this job was created?

Hello Foggy,

On saturday night I scheduled a full backup job, then on sunday night incremental job the message did not appeared. The job has the default settings incremental mode, I think I'll set a full active at least once a month.

Will keep monitoring to be sure if the full backup did solve the issue.

If the original job used forever forward (no full backup scheduled), then merge process on reaching the specified number of restore points is expected.

For this large(1.8 TB) SQL VM wich would be the recommended method to backup?

Backup method should be selected primarily based on your space requirements and target storage capabilities.

So it seems reverse incremental would be a better choice to save storage space.

That's right, it is a more space-effective backup method.
