Restore SQL DB to server on another AD domain

Post by DeaconZ »

We recently started backing up many SQL servers in our enterprise with VEEAM. However, some of them (in domain B) have the same hostname as SQL servers in the same domain as the VEEAM server (domain A). When we tested a restore, it didn't restore to the correct SQL server (should be SQL1.DomainB.local), but rather it restored to a server with the same name on domain A (SQL1.DomainA.local). It appears that it points to the NetBIOS name of the SQL server.

I even tried pointing the default options to SQL1.DomainB.local in Veeam Explorer for SQL, and did a "Restore to another server" and used Domain B credentials. It starts to mount the restore point, but then fails with the message "Unable to resolve account name 'DOMAINB\SQL.Serviceacct' on machine SQL1. Access is Denied." This is obviously because somewhere along the line, it still falls back to the shortname and there is not an AD trust (nor will there be).

Anybody else run into this situation?

As a workaround, I got the restore to succeed by editing the hosts file on the VEEAM server to point SQL1 to the IP of SQL1.domainB.local. Then it worked.
