limits of Retention period

Post by ckent »

Hello Veeam users.

Just trying to see if it is viable to have long term retention.
im currently set to 365 days but i think im going to have storage spare.

What is your retention currently set to ?
How far back do you go ?

is that for a single backup chain or have you got periodic fulls in that chain? what backup mode are you using?

i was asking people what they have and how far back they go.

lets not try to convolute the post with lots of random questions.
if there are published limits for each backup type that might be interesting to know for reference.

I don't believe these are random questions, as based on the backup mode, retention policy requirements (fulls vs increments), then the recommendation might vary. Please check existing topics with a similar question > retention 365.

Let us know if that helps.

doesn't help at all.
but that's why I was asking other uses and not Veeam.

as getting a straight reply from veeam is impossible.
for example if I create a backup job out of the box with all the default settings (Incremental with Synthetic fulls and transforming backup chain into roll backs).
How far can i got back before it would be considered unreliable ?

Hi,
I know this will sound like a convoluted answer from Veeam, but any available backup method is as reliable as it can configured in the interface, otherwise there would be a different limit in the UI itself. Unless some of the increments gets a corruption at the storage or filesystem layer (so not a layer Veeam can control) making the remaining part of the chain un-usable, but this is the answer you don't want...

So you are saying that if there any hard limits they are encoded directly into the UI.
i can select the retention policy to be 999 days as that's the largest number I can type in the UI.
it strikes me that such a limitation is simple a side effect of the UI not accepting more than 3 chars, as opposed to a considered limitation.

So the longest retention period is 999 days ?

999 restore points, not days. They are days only if the job is executed daily.
