Error backing up to SMB Share on Linux Serv

Post by bradb »

First off, new to Veeam. I tried a seach and didn't quite find what I thought was an answer to my problem. My apologies if it's out there.

This is somewhat of a two-part question, as I'm not sure if they're related or not.

I have 3 VMs I'm trying to back up. Veeam is installed on the 4th VM. The total provisioned size of the 3 VMs is 1TB. The actual amount of data is just under 200GB. I have a second physical server running Ubuntu Server serving a SMB share.

From Windows I can create files, folders, etc.

I even removed any specific user references so guest access has read/write.

However this is error I get:

0 of 3 VMs processed (0 failed, 0 warnings)

Total size of VMs to backup: 1,000.00 GB
Processed size: 0.00 KB
Processing rate: 0 KB/s
Start time: 9/20/2010 1:14:15 PM
End time: 9/20/2010 1:14:21 PM
Duration: 0:00:05

Building path for backup
Failed to create dir "\\192.168.1.21\VBUStorage\Backups\"
Access to the path '\\192.168.1.21\VBUStorage\Backups\' is denied.

I have no idea where to go from here??

(Second Part of Question) There is 475GB (3 x 250GB RAID 5) available to that share. The fact that it's referencing the total size of the all combined drives in the VM have anything to do with it? Or will it case other errors?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello Brad,

Welcome to Veeam Community forums! Please review existing topic which should help you to sort out your issue:

As regards to your second question, your target storage capacity should be enough to backup 200 GB of data, though the actual size of all backup files depends on the retention policy you choose and the amount of changes on your VMs.

Hope it helps!

While you should be able to get this working via an SMB share if you have correct permissions (remember that the SMB login will occur based on the account that the Veeam service is running under) you might want to consider adding the Linux has as a backup target directly. This typically offers significantly better performance and works great.
