Converting multiple stand alone Backup Repo into SOBR ?

Post by albertwt »

Hi People,

My Veeam Backup 9.0 U1 repository server in the Data Centre is configured with multiple drives like the below by my predecessor:

From Windows Explorer view:

Which shows like the below in Veeam console:

So how can I set it up as Scale out backup Repository so that I do not have to manually move/update the backup repository when one volume is about to full ?

Create a sobr repo and add them to it. Afterwards you'll have to run an active full to make sure the backup jobs will use "per vm chains". Also have a look at veeam-backup-replication-f2/moving-exis ... 35057.html

Niels,

Thanks for the reply.
So in my case here is that possible to do it considering the existing drive partitions / LUNs are mostly almost full ? AS per my screenshot.

Running Active Full on all of the backup job will cause some impact to the VMware environment, so is it possible to just enable the active full manually one by one ?

I've got some Exchange Servers backup job that are disabled due to the VMFS datastore capacity issue, so I cannot take full backup. Can I still use the SOBR ?

Yes you can, adding them won't change the current disk usage. In regards to the active fulls, these can be done 1 by 1 to minimize the load on the VMware infra.

I guess with new fulls you'll optimize the files and save some space which isn't reclaimed right now.

Also enable bitlooker on your jobs for more saving if possible. https://www.veeam.com/blog/save-backup- ... ooker.html

Thanks Niels,

Yes, I'm now enabling the Bitlooker to all of my backup job one by one.
all of my existing Backup job are using Reverse Incremental and on top of the the RAID6 & RAID50 hence it is very slow for the Full backup to be completed.

I guess you are right once it is already converted, then I can move on to SOBR to manage the backup job files allocation autoamtically like VMware DRS :D

Well you could consider switching the backup method to lower the impact on the backup storage before running the active full.

OK, so the only choice that I can select is the Forever forward incremental:

Is that the correct settings to convert all of my backup job ?

based on my understanding is Forever forward incremental is recommended due to the lower disk panalty rate hence it finishes quicker ?
correct me if I'm wrong.

You are absolutely helpful Niels.

No wonder my backup here with Reverse Incremental took long time to finish with the existing RAID6 and RAID50. :D
