How to handle SQL transaction logs via Veeam backup

Post by stanleymok »

Hi all,

As I am using Veeam & Replication v9 to backup SQL server database, and I have some question about this...

1. How Veeam to handle truncate logs action?

2. What method does Veeam to use?

3. Once truncated logs to Veeam backup, are these logs will Increment?

4. Any other permission setup in SQL database?

Thanks a lots,

Hi,
How Veeam to handle truncate logs action?
That depends on what truncation option you choose.
What method does Veeam to use?
Not sure what you mean, could you please elaborate?
Once truncated logs to Veeam backup, are these logs will Increment?
If you are asking if the copies of logs inside the backup will increment, then the answer is "No". Logs are stored as a separate set of files thus each new log backup session will create a new log backup file in the repository.
Any other permission setup in SQL database?
Please see this article (the very bottom of it).

Thanks

Hi PTide,

Thank you for your reply, for P2, I would like to know what method (like copy and move, cut action) to handle SQL transaction logs in database and Veeam backup? Besides, once truncate logs is complete, SQL database size will decrease, right?

Thanks a lots,

That depends on job's Guest Processing settings.

Database and transaction log are two different things. Log truncation will free logical log space, but neither database nor physical log file will get smaller. Please take a look at this article for details.

Thanks.
