VMware Backup Advice

Hello,

I am looking into Veeam as a backup solution for our vSphere 6 U1 environment. I am starting with Veeam Free (since I don't want to burn through the Trial until I have it functioning). Our current vSphere environment is running 3x hosts and 2x EqualLogic SANs on a dedicated iSCSI network - each host has 4x NICs for iSCSI MPIO, there are no more NICs available on the hosts.

I have recently purchased a Synology DS1815+ with 8x 2TB Seagate Constellation drives that I would like to use as the Backup Repository for 20 VMs (about 5TB of data). I also have a decommissioned Dell R610 server that could possibly be used. I tried using the Synology to implement vDP with iSCSI MPIO and it was terribly slow. I have abandoned vDP and I am looking for advice on the best way to setup Veeam.

I keep getting hung up on the best way to integrate the Synology. From my understanding, I would NOT add the Synology to vSphere, but instead add it to the Veeam VM using the Windows iSCSI initiators?

Hi Brian, yes, iSCSI is a preferred option for presenting backup repository.
