Veeam V9 Backup Backup & Replication and Enterprise Manager
1) In Veeam BEM we would like have the feature that our departments are be able to follow the backups of their own VMs.
Yes, in the setting Restore Operator only VMs are seen, with a restricted sight to the Backups. This is not enough.
If we give the department the rights of portal user they can see more,
but this department can then view the contents (in tab jobs) of the other departments. This is actually undesirable.
There should be a user or group setting, which can see only their own VM and their own jobs.
2) At time it is not possible to use Instant VM Recovery (Restore to the original location) for snapVault technology of NetApp.
It doesn't work on Veeam BEM and doesn't work on Veeam BR.

Re: Veeam V9 Backup Backup & Replication and Enterprise Mana
Hi Atilla,
1. Can you please tell us how your departments access their own VMs in your company? Do you use vSphere accounts? Also do you possibly have vCloud Director installed? BTW, what kind of data would you like to expose to your departments, just backup job state or something extra?
Thanks!

1. Our departments don't work on the machines directly. They are the administrators of their machines. There are running applications of all kind on the VMs. The thing is they have to ensure that the daily backups were run properly. They want to see there own backup history. They want work in the manner, that they are able to manage the VMs, for example to perform a Restore independently.
Yes, the departments have a restricted rights over vShpere client. We will introduce vCloud Director probably in the future.

Re: Veeam V9 Backup Backup & Replication and Enterprise Mana
Ok, thanks for clarification, this makes total sense.
While Enterprise Manager currently doesn't offer the capability that you're asking for, you can try to use Veeam ONE (part of Availability Suite) for this purpose. Since you have restricted rights for all departments in the vSphere Client, you should also benefit from using multi-tenant feature of Veeam ONE. All users that have access to vSphere Client will be able to log in to Veeam ONE (using the same account from vSphere) and monitor/report on VMs that they have access to only, this includes backup reporting as well. For example, if you take a look at Protected VMs report, then you will see that it lists all VMs that have restore points within the required RPO, so all your departments would be able to see backup history for their VMs only, without having access to the job list and other info from Enterprise Manager.
As regards the restore capabilities, then you can keep using Enterprise Manager for this.
Let me know if that helps!

1.
Thanks, I'll check Veeam One regarding the ability to restricted view of the backups history.
As said, they should be able to see only the backup history.
The departments should not see too much and not too little information!
2.
Our backup environment is NetApp.
It would be fantastic, if the departments be able to perform restore using SnapVault technology of NetApp.
It would also be nice if the two capabilities (1. and 2.) would combined in one tool.

1. BTW, how do you categorize department VMs in vSphere Client? Tags, folders, resource pools, naming convention?

2. Many Thanks.
1. We have certain categories of folders in which the accompanying VM are localized. The respective departments have then correspondingly restricted rights within the folders that are assigned to them.
